Unfortunately we've now come to the end of our A to Z of council services, so we're finishing with.....

Z is for Zero Waste

At the heart of 51³Ô¹ÏÃâ·ÑApp and Bute Council’s proposed waste strategy is the waste hierarchy focussed on preventing waste in the first instance.

If and when waste is created, next priority is preparing it for a reusable purpose, followed by recycling or other recovery method. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!

Pete Leckie is a Project Manager dealing with this. He said: “One tonne of food waste sent to landfill produces 450 kilogrammes of CO2e (equivalents) which then go into the atmosphere. Preventing one tonne of food waste saves 3,590 kilogrammes of CO2e.

“Apart from reducing greenhouse gas emissions, choosing to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle creates closed loops, protecting important (and finite) raw materials, creates jobs and provides a range of economic opportunities. In Scotland, we throw away 630,000 tonnes of food waste every year. More than two thirds of this could have been avoided and saved us over £1 billion.â€
